The Absa Fellowship journey will coincide with the duration of a student’s undergraduate studies, with candidates ultimately emerging as private or public sector leaders in their chosen industries; able to actively shape their societies, promote sustainability and bring the possibility to live in ways that the world hasn’t seen before.
What does the Fellowship offer?
The Absa Fellowship Programme is much more than an ordinary scholarship or bursary initiative. While successful candidates will receive financial support towards their academic studies, they are expected to actively participate in a specially curated leadership development programme created by Absa.

- A strong student with a matric average of 65% or more
- Between the age of 18 and 25 years
- Entering the first year of tertiary studies, with provisional or full acceptance from Absa’s pre-selected universities.

Absa Scholarships / Absa Fellowship Programme 2021
‘I am because you are.’ The popular adage of Ubuntu makes all who live in Africa an integral part of the continent’s success. That’s why Absa sees itself as more than just a business and the introduction of the Shared Growth strategy is a commitment to this way of living.

Shared Growth is firmly rooted in the mutual progression of the continent through three pillars – education, financial inclusion, and enterprise development.
“Our job is not just to strengthen our business, but to help create wealth for our customers and shareholders, and make our continent a better place to live,” she adds.
As part of its fulfilling the promise of Shared Growth through education, Absa founded the Education and Skills Scholarship Programme in 2016. This was in response to protests and calls for higher learning institutions across the country to lower the cost of tuition fees, and Absa endeavoured to play its part in the national plight. The aim is to help alleviate some of the financial pressure on students from previously disadvantaged communities.
Since its inception, 1 579 students in the

- The University of Western Cape and Venda
However, the University has received scholarships. 112 scholarships have also been granted to Absa staff dependents.
This year, the programme has its sights set on 3 000 scholarships to the value of R210 million.
505 Absa employees have already received scholarships for their children.

He is the first person in his family to attend university, currently doing a BA in Media Studies and Journalism at the University of the Free State.

His family’s financial difficulties saw him lose his father in an attempt to fulfil tuition payments.
But now with this scholarship programme, Joshwin will be able to complete his studies and make a meaningful contribution to society.
Our financial support
Africa currently has the highest financial exclusion rates in the world, with the formally unbanked or underbanked population rising as high as 86% in some countries. Approximately, one in four adults has access to a formal bank account and an estimated 326 million adults in Africa remain unbanked.
Therefore, there is a significant need for increased inclusion and access to financial services, in order to enable individuals to plan for more sustainable futures for themselves and their families.
For us to support financial inclusion, we continue to deliver financial education and awareness programmes in public-private partnership.
- In South Africa, our unique initiative with the Department of Basic Education (DBE) provides financial management and governance training to school governing bodies, as well as collaborations with organisations such as the Association for Savings and Investment (ASISA) geared to improving the financial wellness of our communities.
- In Botswana, Ghana, Seychelles, South Africa, Uganda and Zambia we deliver consumer education and financial literacy programmes, through accredited training partners, to empower individuals to make informed choices and improve their lives through responsible personal financial management.
