Along with generous funding, the Chevening program includes plenty of extracurricular activities and volunteering opportunities designed to help Chevening Scholars experience the best of British culture and make the most of their time in the UK. These range from sightseeing trips in different parts of the country to networking events with other scholars on the program.

Who can apply for a Chevening Scholarship?

Chevening enables outstanding emerging leaders from all over the world to pursue one-year master’s degrees in the UK.

There is no such thing as a ‘typical’ Chevening Scholar, but those who are successful tend to have ambition, leadership qualities, and a strong academic background.

We encourage you to apply if you meet Chevening eligibility criteria and other requirements.

What matters is your ability to submit a strong application that demonstrates you are capable of excelling on an intense master’s course in the UK, and that you have a clear vision for your future – and maybe even that of your sector or your country.

ELIGIBILITY FOR CHEVENING SCHOLARSHIPS

To be eligible for a Chevening Scholarship you must:

  • Be a citizen of a Chevening eligible country or territory (there are over 140 ‘Chevening countries’, most of which are developing nations in Africa, Asia, South America, and Eastern Europe – there are some exceptions, however)
  • Return to your country of citizenship for a minimum of two years after your award has ended. One of the main conditions for Chevening funding is that you return to your home country for at least two years after finishing your Masters course. This enable you to put into practice for the leadership skills you’ve developed during your time in the UK and make a positive impact in your community.

CHEVENING SCHOLARSHIPS

  • Demonstrate that you have achieved a minimum English Language requirement: IELTS Academic – 6.5
  • TOEFL iBT – 79
  • 1 Advanced – 176
  • PTE Academic – 58
  • Trinity ISE II – Listening 2, Reading 15, Speaking 8, Writing 14
  • Have completed all components of an undergraduate degree that will enable you to gain entry onto a postgraduate program at a UK university by the time you submit your application. This is typically equivalent to an upper second-class 2:1 honors degree in the UK but may be different depending on your course and university choice.
  • Have at least two years (equivalent to 2,800 hours) of work experience.
  • Apply to three different eligible UK university courses and have received an unconditional offer from one of these choices by 15 July 2021.
  • You are not eligible for a Chevening Scholarship if you:
  • Hold British or dual British citizenship (unless you are a citizen of a British Overseas Territory or hold BN(O) and are applying from Hong Kong).
  • Hold refugee status in a non-Chevening eligible country. Applicants who are citizens of a Chevening-eligible country and who hold refugee status in a Chevening-eligible country are eligible for a scholarship.
  • Are an employee, a former employee, or relative of an employee (since July 2018) of Her Majesty’s Government (including British embassies/high commissions; the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy; Department for International Trade; the Ministry of Defense; and the Home Office), or a staff member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities.
  • Employees, former employees, or relatives of an employee (since July 2018) of Chevening Partner organisations are eligible to apply, but cannot receive a Chevening Partner Award from the organisations from which they work, previously worked, or are affiliated with through relatives.
  • Have previously studied in the UK with funding from a UK Government-funded scholarship.

COVERAGE FOR Chevening Scholarships in UK

A full Chevening Scholarship award normally covers:

  • Full payment of Masters tuition fees.
  • Airfare to and from your country by an approved route.
  • Arrival allowance.
  • Grant for the cost of preparation of a thesis or dissertation (if required).
  • An excess baggage allowance.
  • The cost of an entry clearance (Visa application)
  • A monthly stipend to cover accommodation and living expenses. It will depend on whether you are studying inside or outside London. The amount will be confirmed in the letter of acceptance.
  • You may also receive an ‘event travel top-up allowance’ to contribute towards the cost of travelling to any mandatory Chevening events, which are usually held in London.

The total value of a scholarship is usually around £30,000 over the course of a one-year Masters, but the exact amount will vary depending on your circumstances and requirements. Stipend amounts are reviewed each year.

How to Apply

You are expected to submit application to the UK universities before or as the same time of applying for the Chevening Scholarship. Applications for Chevening Awards can only be submitted using the Chevening online application system, available through the ‘apply’ button on your country’s page.

It is your responsibility to pay for any fees relating to your university applications (including English tests, GMAT tests and administration fees). The courses to apply for are:

  • A one year post graduate Master’s course.
  • The University of Oxford Certificate in Diplomatic Studies.
  • An approved short course (as advertised from time to time on the Chevening website and or your local British Embassy or High Commission website)

To apply for the scholarship:

  1. Register on the Chevening Scholarship website to receive notification when the eChevening site is open.
  2. Complete the form online and answer all questions on the form.
  3. Check the application timeline for your country by selecting your country from the drop-down list of countries at the right side of the scholarship page.
  4. Make sure you have all the requirements of the school you are applying to.
  5. Submit a list of your preferred Universities as part of the eChevening scholarship. Make sure you have either applied for admission or are in the process o0f applying by the time you submit your application to Chevening.
  6. State clearly how you meet the criteria on the personal statement you will submit as part of your application.
